I thought this would be a great entry to post now because I experienced an item on my bucket list this summer! I don't know about you, but my bucket list has a lot of items that will definitely take longer to accomplish than others either because they are geographically (and therefore financially) out of reach in the short term or because they will take a greater dedication of time as well as skill than I am currently capable of or willing to give. Then there are those items that are doable now. It's just a matter of taking initiative to educate myself and then organize the experience. I crossed one such item off my list this summer. On my list of 100 Life Goals wedged between "Experience Havasupai" and "Spend a night in the Crusoe Villas at Lankanfushi, Maldives" is the item, "Bike the Hiawatha Trail." Well, I did just that last month. I got a group of family and friends together and we traveled up north to bike the Route of the Hiawatha, which has been deemed "The Crown Jewel" of rail to trail adventures. Biking the 15 mile gently down hill sloping trail was a highlight of my summer. Whether we were using our headlamp to navigate the 1.7 mile tunnel or catching vistas on the sky high trestles, we LOVED our adventure. See the video below to decide if this experience belongs on YOUR bucket list.

Wow, that looks so much fun! I saw that this is in Idaho. What part of Idaho is it located? I may have to add this to my own bucket list.

I know exactly where Wallace is, my grandpa was from that area. Next time I am in Northern Idaho, I will have to check it out. I have some family members who would absolutely love this trail.

I loved the 30 second ad so much, Becky, that I had to watch a 20 minute ride that someone filmed as they biked. It's absolutely stunning. I saw that it was 15 miles long and plenty of kids were riding it. How long does it take to bike and are there better months/times of day to travel it? Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you got interested in the ride Naomi-it's definitely worth the trip. It's suitable for all ages because of the gentle down hill slope and also because the trail is wide and flat. Most people bike to the bottom then ride the shuttle back to the top. Some ambitious riders rode the 15 miles back up to the trail head. It took our group about 6 hours to complete the ride. We got on the trail at 10:00 and were back to the top by 4:00. You could do it faster, but we took our time stopping at most of the trestles to play, once for a picnic lunch and many photo stops! I'm not sure when they close for the winter, but Fall seems like the ideal time to go since it would be a bit cooler! Good luck!

Hi Becky,

Pennsylvania to Idaho is quite a trip, Ryan! That's great that you make it out to visit family. It would be interesting to see if your father has heard of or been on the trail. Cataldo is close to the trail head. REALLY close. I hope you get to experience this next time you're here! I bet Pennsylvania is really green, so it may not be much for you to visit northern Idaho, but I have fallen in love with that part of our state after visiting this summer. So much more green than down south! Is it green where you live?!

This looks amazing, Becky! About how many items are on your bucket list? I often make comments in passing about something being on my bucket list but I never write it down! Recently I was chatting with some students about what it means to 'kick the bucket'. I explained that this is where the idea of a bucket list comes from. Sadly I couldn't tell them but maybe two items on mine! At least it's a manageable number. ;)

Hey Todd, I'd guess I have about 40 items on my list. Lemme go check...now I'm curious! Lots of the things on my list are lofty, but I think it's fun to dream. I challenge you to record the stuff you have in your head and start a bucket list. You should write down ten items today!
